Tajuk CUSEWAGE SECONDARY TREATMENT PROCESS CONTROL
Penerangan CUSewage Secondary Treatment Process Control describes the competency required to monitor routine inspections of secondary treatment assets. He/She has to collect and analyse data on treatment process and infrastructure condition, monitor fault reporting accordingly and carry out basic system adjustments to enhance system performance according to organisational and statutory requirements.

Secondary treatment is called the activated sludge process. A large aeration tank mixes the wastewater and sludge that stimulates the growth of oxygen-using bacteria and other tiny organisms that are naturally present in sewage. These beneficial microorganisms degrade organic materials that are polluting the wastewater. Aerated wastewater then flows to the final settling tanks where heavy particles and other solids settle to the bottom as secondary sludge. Some of this sludge is re-circulated back to the aeration tanks as “seed” to stimulate the activated sludge process. The rest of the secondary sludge is removed and added to the primary sludge for further processing in the sludge handling facility. Partially treated wastewater then flows to a disinfection tank for tertiary treatment.

The person who is competent in this CU shall be able to determine secondary treatment process operating parameters, carry out verification of work order, monitor secondary treatment process activities, troubleshoot causes of abnormality in secondary treatment system, carry out system adjustments and corrective actions for secondary treatment and update supervisory record.

The outcome of this competency is to produce partially treated wastewater (effluent) devoid of most organic pollutants for the subsequent tertiary treatment plant process in accordance with the sewage treatment plant (STP) design acceptance criteria and statutory regulations.
