Tajuk CUSLUDGE TREATMENT PROCESS CONTROL
Penerangan CUSludge treatment process control describes the competency required to monitor routine inspections of sludge treatment assets. He/She has to collect and analyse data on treatment process and infrastructure condition, monitor fault reporting accordingly and carry out basic system adjustments to enhance system performance according to organisational and statutory requirements.

The sludge produced by primary and secondary treatment is concentrated in thickening tanks where sludge settles and separates from the water. The water is then sent back to the head of the plant or to the aeration tanks for additional treatment. After thickening, the sludge is placed in oxygen free tanks called digesters and heated to stimulate the growth of anaerobic bacteria, which consume organic material in the sludge. The digestion process converts much of the material into water, carbon dioxide and methane gas. The black sludge that remains is known as digested sludge and is pumped to the dewatering facility.

The person who is competent in this CU shall be able to determine sludge treatment process parameters, carry out verification of work order, monitor sludge treatment process activities, troubleshoot causes of abnormality in the sludge treatment system, carry out system adjustments and corrective actions for sludge treatment and update supervisory record.

The outcome of this competency is to produce partially treated wastewater (effluent) and solid sludge (digested sludge) with much more reduced amount of organic pollutants for landfill disposals in accordance with treatment plant design acceptance criteria and statutory regulations.
