Manakala pada tahun 2014 pengeluaran telah menurun sebanyak 1.67% kepada 1,458,128 t.m, dengan nilai sejumlah RM 8.785 Bilion. Memandangkan ikan merupakan sumber protein penting kepada penduduk tempatan, adalah perlu agar diurus secara mapan. Adalah penting agar peruntukan yang mencukupi dan berterusan diperlukan bagi mengurus sumber perikanan negara agar ianya kekal menyumbang pada tahap tertinggi secara mapan. Permintaan ikan negara dijangka akan semakin bertambah selari dengan pertambahan penduduk. Permintaan sepatutnya diimbangi dengan bekalan yang mencukupi. Kerajaan telah mengenal pasti akuakultur sebagai salah satu sumber utama untuk meningkatkan pengeluaran ikan bagi memenuhi permintaan domestik dan memperkembang potensi eksport. Pada tahun 2014 perusahaan akuakultur di negara ini telah menghasilkan pengeluaran berjumlah kira-kira 520,514 tan metrik dengan nilai kira-kira RM3.47 bilion. Pengeluaran tersebut telah menyumbang 26% kepada jumlah pengeluaran ikan negara. Program Zon Industri Akuakultur (ZIA) merupakan program pengezonan kawasan tanah dan perairan yang dikenalpasti sesuai untuk dibangunkan dengan projek akuakultur berskala komersial sebagai salah satu strategi untuk meningkatkan pengeluaran ikan, udang dan kerang kerangan yang ditetapkan di bawah Dasar Pertanian Negara ke Tiga (DPN3). ZIA adalah kawasan yang mendapat kelulusan dari Kerajaan Negeri melalui Mesyuarat Majlis Kerajaan (MMK). Kementerian Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani telah mengenal pasti 61 kawasan seluas 36,743 hektar untuk dijadikan Zon Industri Akuakultur (ZIA) di seluruh negara.
